Kyaikhtiyo:
Located on the Kyaik Hto
hills (Mon State) and about 160 km from
Yangon.
Mawlamyaing:
Capital of the Mon State. It
is the third largest city of Myanmar and
about 280 km from Yangon (about 6.5 hours
drive).
Mudon:
It is 29 km south of
Mawlamyaing and is well known for cotton
weaving business.
Thanbyu Zayat:
A small town that lies 64 km
south of Maw La Myaing. It is famous for the
Thanbyu Zayat war cemetery.
Main attraction:
Kyaikhtiyo
pagoda,
four hours drive from Yangon, is one of the
main attractions for the tourists due to the
pleasant location and the mystery. How the
gilded boulder on which the Kyaikhtiyoe
pagoda stands, is precariously balanced on
the downward sloping edge of the cliff?
The pilgrims ride about 30
minutes ride the open truck from the base
camp (Kimpun) to Yathae Taung from which
they take a short hike (about one hour) to
the pagoda. Or one could ride a sedan chair
with four bearers from Yathae Taung to the
pagoda. October to May is the best time to
visit Kyaikhtiyoe.
Mawlamyaing:
It used to be the capital of British Burma
from 1827 to 1852, until the capital was
moved to Yangon after the Second British
Burma war. Maw La Myaing prospered during
the days when it was the major teak port.

Thanbyu
Zayat allied war cemetry:
A resting place for the 3,771
prisoners of war who died during the
construction of Burma-Siam railway.
Most of those buried were
British, but there are also tombstones for
American, Dutch and Australian soldiers.
Thanbyu Zayat was the western
terminus of that railway line.
